When it comes to ghosts you’ll find that more often than not the people being haunted have no idea who the spirit was during its life. This is not the case when you are being haunted by someone who was previously a celebrity. I guess some celebrities weren’t really all that ready to leave their lifestyle behind and so stuck around to continue enjoying all the fun.
Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini was a world famous escape artist. Even though he had many close calls with some of his acts, he eventually died from a ruptured appendix in October 1926. The Hungarian stage performer’s ghost is believed to haunt the Jacki Gaughan’s Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas where they still host a Houdini Tribute Show. It is strongly believed that he creeps around in the dressing rooms, moving objects and making sure that the show remains up to his standard.
Joan Crawford
Joan Crawford was a famous actress with a career that lasted for decades and included many controversies. Joan had a daughter who often told others that she believed their home was haunted. In May 1977 Joan Crawford died of a heart attack and her ghost is said to have joined the other spirits residing in their home. These spirits are known to start fires around the house in an attempt to burn down the building. Multiple exorcisms have been done on the house with no success, with one exorcist even saying that the home is a “place of conspicuous negativity”. Whatever that means.
Abraham Lincoln
As we all know, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes in April 1865 at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington DC. To this day White House staff have reported seeing his tall and slender ghost wandering around the building looking cheerful. Even former Prime Minister Winston Churchill had his own run-in with old Abe. Churchill reported that he was climbing out of his bathtub with nothing but his cigar when he saw the former president giving him a little smirk.
Elvis Presley
It is said that the spirit of Elvis Presley still walks the property of his Graceland home. Having died suddenly of a heart attack in September 1977 it is possible that he felt he was not done with Earth yet and still wanted to hang around. Presley has also been spotted flaunting his white shimmery suit at the Las Vegas Hilton and it is believed that he appears at the mention of his name at the old RCA Recording Studios. Those who have mentioned him have reported bizarre and unexplained sounds occurring on the sound systems, as well as flickering lights.
John Lennon
John Lennon was shot outside his New York home by Mark Chapman in December 1980. Former band member Paul McCartney reported that he saw John Lennon appear before him while recording one of Lennon’s unfinished songs. Although his ghost has apparently appeared to many celebrities it is believed that he spends most of his time wandering about his home in New York.
Marilyn Monroe
Visitors of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel that stay in the Cabana Room Suite have often reported that they saw the late Marilyn Monroe hanging about in her favourite suite. Apart from that reports have been made that the icon has appeared to them in the full length mirror that is placed in the lobby. She is also often spotted dancing in the hotel’s ballroom. Monroe died of an overdose in September 1962 and can also apparently be found lurking about at her old LA home.
It is possible that these celebrities stayed here because they would like to enjoy the same life they had, just without all the pressures of being alive. It is also possible that none of these stories are true and these celebrities are still being used for publicity. There is no doubt that hotel’s that advertise the spirit of a dead celebrity will serve as an attraction to many people. It is a way to keep their memory alive.
