Children and Ghosts

Let’s be real. Kids can be creepy. They have imaginary friends, they say the creepiest things and they are used in just about every horror movie. There have been theories for years and years surrounding children and ghosts. Theories that suggest they can see and hear more than we can, that they can bring their imaginations to life in a way we could never believe. There are even theories that teenagers are responsible for what we call poltergeist activity.

A child's brain is 135% larger than an adult's brain in comparison to the rest of their body. This allows them to see and hear finer details and they are more likely to notice minor changes or even possibly items and people that are invisible to adults. This also gives them a very powerful imagination and causes the veil between reality and imagination to become very thin. Since they are so young, they are unlikely to ever question why nobody else can see what they can. They might just accept it as normal.

As you grow older and learn to question the things that are happening around you, you learn to ignore and brush off anything that seems slightly out of the ordinary. It is only really when something extremely odd is going on that adults start to make note of it and ask questions. We create a doubt of ghosts and the things that we cannot explain. Children do not have this doubt. Kids don’t fight the possibility of an image or a sound or a disembodied voice being entirely real. It is only around the age of 11 that we develop a sense of reality and begin to ignore and doubt the unusual things that happen without explanation.

Biologically, children have a very different vision to adults. They capture more UV light through their eyes. This means that they might have a biological advantage over us, and possibly they really can see spirits and entities that adult eyes are no longer able to capture.

A more spiritual theory is that children are open to the spirit world because, until recently, they were on “the other side”. Maybe it is possible that as we grow older we lose a connection to that part of our reality. This ties into the theory that having seen someone die and cross over to the other side will open you up to see their ghost, or the ghosts of others. Possibly, in those moments we briefly reconnect to that world and therefore are more open to it.

The conclusion on whether or not there is stronger connection between children and the spirit world is inconclusive, as is anything to do with the paranormal. One thing I believe for certain is that if your child and your cat are simultaneously freaking out, it might be time to get a new home to live in.
