Spirituality vs. Self-Hypnosis

The following blog post is inspired by a reader that sent me a message on the subject. It immediately tickled my fancy and made me think about myself in a different way and question things differently. So this week I will write about spirituality vs. self-hypnosis. Let me start by defining what each of these terms mean.

Spirituality

  • “The quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things” In this post, however, we are referring to spirituality in the religious meaning.

Self-hypnosis

  • “Self-hypnosis or auto-hypnosis is a form, a process or the result of a self-induced hypnotic state” (To hypnotise yourself)

Now that you have an idea about what self-hypnosis means, let me take you on a summarised break-down of how it works and how it happens. I am not sure if any of you have been hypnotised before but what is evident is that if you do not want to be hypnotised it will not work.

Steps for self-hypnosis:

  1. Motivation: In order to do anything you need a motivation for it, otherwise what is the point?

  2. Relaxation: Any state of hypnosis requires the patient to be in a completely relaxed state (in this case it is yourself).

  3. Concentration: You need to concentrate on your desired goal.

  4. Direction: You need to direct and visualize the desired result.

All of this sounds very familiar to me. Almost as if it is just like meditation or what some might call spell-work. Self-hypnosis is used for various reasons. It can be used for pain management, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and even obesity. You can hypnotise yourself to no longer crave that delicious junk food that you eat every evening or to no longer feel the pain in the back of your neck every morning. When used correctly, self-hypnosis can be used to recall memories and even improve control of your emotions.

What does this mean? This means that it is absolutely possible to be so convinced of something that you hypnotise yourself into seeing it as real. Spell casting goes through the same steps as self-hypnosis which means that you could possibly be self-hypnotising yourself into believing that the spell has worked and in seeing the change that you had desired. This does not mean that it did not work though. Your goal was still reached and the purpose was still served. It just means that we should look more carefully at what we believe and do not believe.

I have only briefly touched on this subject as I still need to do a lot more research on it. I will hopefully be able to post a more in-depth article about it soon. I hope that, at least, it made you stop and think a little bit.

A big thank you to my reader Marcus. It is not often I receive a message that makes me think as much as yours did.
