Strange Folklore

We all know some of the more popular tales of vampires and mermaids and the Tokoloshe. There are, however, many stories out there that we are not aware of. Mainly due to the fact that we are not part of certain cultures or have not visited certain areas of the world. I came across some of these stories recently and thought I would share some of the stranger ones with you.

Goddess Kapo and her Flying Vagina

Kohe-Kohe-Lele is a Hawaiian goddess whose name translates to “Kapo with the Travelling Vagina”. This Goddess not only has an unusual super power but she uses it to save lives. One day Kohe-Kohe-Lele’s sister was being assaulted by the half man, half dog god of fertility known as “Kamapua’a”. Kohe-Kohe-Lele needed to protect her sister so she did the only thing she could think of. She ripped off her winged vagina and threw it. It flew past Kamapua’a who chased it all the way to the edge of the country where it landed and left a crater. This crater is named “Kohelepelepe”.

Even though the goddess is named after it, she has a strong hate for vaginas and anyone wishing to channel Kohe-Kohe-Lele’s spirit needs to wear a ti leaf to avoid having their sensitive areas torn to shreds.

Human Extinction by Jaguar

Aztecs believe that we are not living in the first world. They believe that there were four worlds before this one and each was destroyed by either rain, water, fire or jaguars. This is mostly thanks to one god named Tezacatlipoca.

In the first world Tezacatlipoca felt that humans were not showing him enough respect so he sent jaguars to eat all the humans.

In the second world Tezacatlipoca turned all the humans into monkeys. Quetzalcoatl does not like moneys at all and so the entire human/monkey race was wiped out by a hurricane.

In the third world humans were killed by Tlaloc. Tezacatlipoca stole Tlaloc’s wife. Tlaloc was in a bad space and couldn’t handle everyone nagging him for rain and so he sent a fire to silence all their prayers.

In the fourth world Tezacatlipoca insulted the water goddess by saying that she was only nice to people so that they would speak kindly of her. She cried and cried until her tears had washed the whole world away.

We are currently in the fifth world and that asshole Tezacatlipoca has warned that should we not make enough human sacrifices he will wipe us all out again with an Earthquake.

Rain is God’s Semen

In some parts of Africa, the Earth is a goddess named Lannaya and the sky is her husband. It is for this reason that you must ask for permission first before planting a seed or digging a hole because you are directly destroying her body. When it rains it is believed that the Earth and her sky are making love and so the Earth will be fertilised. They believe that the rain is God’s semen pouring down to fertilise his wife Lannaya.

Selkies

Selkies are a mythical creature in Scottish and Irish folklore. There are two beliefs around Selkies. One is that the souls of people who have drowned at sea become Selkies, and another is that people who were sinners in their lives will be doomed to live as Selkies for eternity. Selkies are seals who can remove their skins and become humans functioning on land. Female selkies are able to attract a husband and have a family under one condition, the husband needs to hide her seal skin because should anyone find her skin she will be forced to put it back on a return to her life in the ocean.

The Banshee

This creature is known in Ireland as Bean Si and in Scotland as Bean Sith. A Banshee is a female spirit who wails when someone is about to die. Her wails are seen as an omen in most parts. A Banshee is seen as a messenger from the underworld. She is usually portrayed as an old, ugly hag who will wash the bloody clothes of those who are about to die. She herself, however, is not dangerous and if you ask nicely she might give you the names of those who are about to die. In special cases you might be able to ask her three questions and she will use her gift of insight to answer you truthfully. In return, you will answer three of her questions.

While researching this topic I came across an endless supply of weird and wonderful folklore from around the world so if you enjoyed this post then you can look forward to a few more strange folklores in the future.
