There are several types of claimed psychic abilities. There is precognition which implies a person knows what will happen in the future. Telepathy is the ability to describe something that is in a remote location, or know how many fingers someone is holding up behind their back. Telekinesis is the ability to move stuff with your mind.
15% of the world believe in psychic abilities while the rest are waiting for some kind of scientific proof. (Side note: 31% of the world believe in a giant invisible man in the sky watching over them and are perfectly happy without any scientific evidence supporting this).
Plenty of scientific tests have been done throughout the years to find out if there truly are telekinetic abilities in this world. These tests do not include bending spoons or moving furniture but focus on smaller obstacles. They focus more on being able to influence the path of a moving object. Someone claiming to have telekinetic abilities will be asked to change the outcome of a few scenarios. For example, someone will flip a coin and the telekinetic will attempt to make it land on heads over 50% of the time. This coin will be flipped over 1000 times. The tests are tedious and not at all perfect but through these tests they have been able to establish that a large majority of people who claim to have telekinetic abilities cannot change the outcome of a flipped coin to suit their best interest.
Science aside, there is a lot of recorded evidence of telekinetic ability and some even claim that what we call “poltergeist hauntings” are actually caused by the telekinetic abilities of someone in the home who is unaware of it. This theory became popular when those investigating poltergeist hauntings found a link between the poltergeist activity and times of major stress in the life of one of the family members, often teenagers.
Interestingly enough it was only in the 1800’s that telekinesis was thought to possibly have a scientific explanation.
To those who have telekinetic ability the definition of telekinesis is “psychic energy and physical energy combine to create vibrations which can be used to cause motion.” It must be pretty awesome having your own superpower like that.
