Over the past while I have been reading about strange places and what makes them strange. Through the course of this I discovered a bunch of really creepy animals I wish I never knew existed. I have made a list of my favourite of these creepy animals.
Atlantic Wolf Fish
I do not have very much information on this fish. All I know is that it looks like something from my nightmares. It has canine-like teeth in the front of both jaw bones and lives on a diet of starfish, sea urchins, crabs and shrimp.
Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko
Ok, so this creep is really cool. It is only found in Madagascar and only comes out at night to hunt. They are known to eat anything that fits into their mouths and larger species have even been known to eat rats. They are masters of camouflage, often mistaken for a leaf. If these geckos get into a fight they will stare their opponent down, open their mouths with their red tongues on display, flash their tails and let out a high-pitched scream.
Honey Pot Ants
These are basically a live storage unit for ants. They keep a food supply for the colony. Basically, other ants will keep bringing them sugary foods and they will just keep eating and eating and eating until their abdomens inflate with a sugary liquid. They are mostly found in desert areas where food is scarce. Occasionally the nest will be raided by other ant colonies in order to get their hands on the “honey pot”. Yes, you can eat them. You just have to pick it up, pop the “honey pot” section into your mouth and bite it until it bursts.
Deep Sea Hatchetfish
There is very little known about this fish because they tend to stay in the deep ocean. They are capable of bioluminescence which means that they create their own light. They produce a light that looks like a filtered light from above which makes them invisible to predators. The position of their eyes means that they can see prey coming from above and they have been known to jump out of water to catch mosquitoes and flies. They are also very, very ugly.
Cthulhu Larva
I can tell you three things about these weirdos:
These are baby sea cucumbers
They live 1000 – 4000 m below sea level
They are so gross
Giraffe Weevil
These are also found in Madagascar, it seems that because the land is so isolated animals have evolved differently to other parts of the planet. These Weevils have only recently been discovered in 2008. They feature a suspended, long neck which is mostly used for aggressive combat against other bugs. They eat mostly flies. The females have been known to wrap their eggs in leaves to keep them safe and although it looks scary, it will never bite you.
Those are my favourite creepy animals that I have come across so far. There might be a few updates in the future with some more creepy thingy majjiggs.
